In this age of political correctness you'd think common courtesy and politeness would fall in line and also be considered important, but it seems as if good manners and kindness are a thing of the past. Gone are the days when people politely responded to party invitations, and gone are the days of considering the needs and feelings of others. In many cases these days, others don't even exist. People don't seem to care anymore. These days it's all about me, and this new attitude that some people have is totally appalling.
It's All About Me!
Have you noticed the t-shirts, posters, and other items with the cute little catchphrase "It's all about me"? How about the shirts that say Princess and other equally nauseating statements? Yeah, it's only a shirt or a poster, but a couple of decades ago, those who were self-proclaimed princesses, and those who wore their selfish attitude on their shirt sleeve were considered stuck-up. They were labeled as snobs, but these days, being a self-proclaimed princess or snob is all the rage. It's not all about you or anyone else, but it's an attitude that's reflected in everyday life within schools, stores, on the highway, and even in homes. Where has politeness gone?
Does R.S.V.P. Mean Anything These Days?
When was the last time you sent out party invitations and put R.S.V.P. on the cards in the hopes of knowing how much food to make and how many people to expect? Chances are it didn't matter that you requested a reply, because more than likely you received very few responses. These days, R.S.V.P. doesn't seem to mean anything. People show up if and when they want to, and if the host or hostess is stuck with extra food or a disappointed child, it doesn't seem to matter to some. Where has politeness gone?
Why would people ignore a request for a response on a party invitation? It only takes a few minutes to call someone to reply. I'm guessing it's because when those who didn't respond hosted a party, they didn't receive the courtesy of a reply. Although you may have personally responded, those who didn't started a snowball of discourtesy, and the politeness of a reply became unimportant.
Shopping Cart Mania
The problem of people blocking aisles with shopping carts isn't anything new, but the level of discourtesy seems to be on the rise. How often have you politely and patiently waited to see something on the shelf in the store while a group of people stood in the way while socializing? Some would attempt to move after hearing the words excuse me, while others would continue to stand around laughing and chatting. They might as well have turned around and said screw you! Politeness isn't always reacted to with politeness, especially in stores.
